hello, everyone. i'm posting this thread to see what your guys' thoughts are on variety in death metal vocals. while some bands, like Origin, Psycroptic, etc use a wide range of lows (incorporating gutturals, regular lows, and midrange) as well as highs (which also have quite a bit of range, James Lee from Origin especially), other bands like Spawn of Possession, Blood Red Throne, etc typically stick to one specific timbre, but somehow pull it off just as well. I'm just curious as to what other metalheads think about the differences in vocal styles.. I'm a vocalist myself, and recently joined another band that is more straightforward death metal than my other project. in one band, Invidiosus (www.myspace.com/invidiosus), i try to use a lot of gutturals and different low/high combinations, while in the second band, Australis (www.myspace.com/AustralisMN), i stick mainly to regular lows, and don't change up the highs as much. some feedback would be sweet... in my personal opinion, Matti Way of Devourment and James Lee of Origin (ex-Origin, now) are the two best vocalists around... let's see what you think!
I am personally a fan of variety.I love psycroptics old singer, and origin is outta this fuckin' world.
hell yeah, psycroptic is bad ass.. matti way is fucking crazy, and he's in SPAWN OF POSSESSION now. as for origin... they are brutal, but they kicked out their vocalist, james lee. in my opinion, he's the best in the business, and their replacement (MICAH from the faceless) is nowhere close to as good as james.
i always been a fan of angel from condemned/cephalotripsy. but the singer for damaged (also terrorusts first album) was pretty fuckin intense too. token remedies research is still onna my top albums of all time

I know he's not brutal death metal, but Mikael Akerfeldt has some sick vocals. Listen to Bleak; it's pretty badass.
Haven't heard their brand new shit, but he hasn't done many highs or any combo shit for a long-ass while. So I guess he gets an F for variety in death vox, but shit, dat nigga can sing.

i dunno man, i think he'd get about a B+ in variety... even his clean singing aside (which is probably some of the only clean singing i actually really like in any metal band), his death vocals are bad ass. he can pull off black metal, death metal, doom, and everything in between. youtube his name, there are some sick videos of him giving "vocal lessons" live at opeth shows!
